Assignment 1: The Rules of Rock Paper Scissors.

Assignment 1: Rules of Rock, Paper, Scissors (Draft)

Both players make a fist and face each other. They count down to zero and then make one of three “symbols” with their hands: a fist (rock), a flat palm (paper), or a peace sign like gesture (scissors) at exactly the same time. Then, depending on the symbol they presented, the player either wins or loses against the other player. The game is often played in three rounds.

Each symbol can defeat one other symbol and is in turn defeated by the other of the three symbols. Because of this structure, the only way a draw can occur is if both players made the same gesture. Rock beats scissors, which beat paper, which beat rock.

While some strategy is involved, in the end the game is difficult to strategize around and is more oriented around luck. That is why it is used as tie breakers in situations where an impartial and perfectly even contest is needed.
